"I'm at Bear Mountain, NY after hiking 15 miles today in 100+ degree heat. I've been drinking tons of water. I could really use a shower -- hopefully several of us will get a room and dinner at the local inn tonight. That would feel wonderful."

Snickers called today from Pawling, NY. He said they're hiking along a ridge overlooking the expressways and towns all along the trail. There's lots of lakes where they've been swimming about every other day lately. That's been great with all the hot weather.

Snickers called today from Salisbury, CT. He and Nets are hiking together again. The terrain is rolling hills with no overlooks -- like hiking through a green tunnel of trees most of the time. He's looking forward to more mountains soon.

Four months on the trail today! Tonight I'll cross the border between Connecticut and Mass. I've been hiking with Nets again and we've stayed pretty close to the Pittsburgh Boys recently. I think it's finally starting to feel like we're getting close to the end, 2/3 of the trail is behind us and only three more states to go. Some hikers are even slowing down, trying to spend as much time out here as possible.
I'm seeing less and less people every day. All the thru-hikers have spread out and many have left the trail for differing reasons. Some are injured or sick; others just need a vacation. I hope all of them make it back to the trail, but even if they do I'll be too far ahead of them to meet again.
I'm excited about getting into Vermont and NH where I've heard the hiking is very different. We'll get above the treeline for the first time and we'll have to ford many rivers. As we get away from DC and NYC, We'll be surrounded by more and more wilderness and less places to get supplies. After Monson, Maine, we will have no way to get food or supplies for the next hundred miles. We will have to carry everything we need to get us all the way to Katahdin.

Got another chance to check out the page, looks great! I'm crossing into Vermont tomorrow, and I met some nice people here in town playing ultimate frizbee. They're all in summer school at Williams College and plotting another "roofing" much like what me, Dave et al made a mess of back at Walton. I was able to give them a few pointers : )

Snickers, the Pittsburgh boys and several other hikers are staying for a few days at First Degree's parents' condo in Killington, VT. Snickers says it's really nice and they're having a great time relaxing.

Snickers and Nets are in Hanover, NH today staying in a fraternity house at Dartmouth. They're drying out their boots from all the rain they've been through and getting ready to head into the White Mountains.
Nets decided to wait here for Ernest P. at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire while Snickers hiked on ahead.  One and a half weeks later Ernest P. showed up and he and Nets resumed their hike, while Snickers went on a cruise.  They hoped that they would all meet again and finish the trail together.
